Teaching Philosophy
TEACHING STYLE:
I truly believe that a teacher must be able to differentiate instruction to fit the needs of each student. We all learn differently and it is the job of a teacher to reach everyone. In my classroom I create lessons that touch upon multiple intelligences. I make hands-on activities to reach the kinesthetic learners, I use pictures for the visual learners, we write or listen to songs/poems for the musical learner, etc. Although it is difficult to embody all of the multiple intelligences in each lesson, I make sure that in my weekly lesson plans I have a variety of activities that will help all of my students learn to the best of their ability. By making learning meaningful, students are more likely to remember it and carry it with them throughout their educational journey.
THE IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONSHIPS:
Over the past four years, I have come to understand myself as a person and as a teacher. Through learning together with my students, I have become a strong and independent leader in the classroom. When I taught in Chicago, I had minimal resources and I had to find creative ways to continually push my student's critical thinking as well as keep them engaged in the classroom. I used my students' personal struggles as a way to motivate them. I have built strong relationships with my students over the years which has shown them that I am dedicated to each of their education. I truly believe a strong, caring relationship opens many doors.
Relationships with parents and colleagues are equally as important. I welcome the opportunity to meet with parents on a daily basis in my classroom because we are partners in their child's education. I have also planned and participated in parent workshops to help educate them on what their child is learning and how they can help strengthen these skills at home. Extending the support which I give in my classroom to their home is essential.
Talking with colleagues and sharing ideas is also critical for being an influential teacher. I openly talk with other professionals about teaching and I am not afraid to ask questions or to try a new strategy or technique. I enjoy observing other teachers because it helps me to reflect on what I do in my own classroom and question my own teaching styles.
STUDENT ACCOUNTABILITY:
I believe that my students and I are a team. We are both responsible for the student's education. I encourage my students to try their hardest and to never give up on themselves. However, they need to take accountability for their work and actions. Just as each student needs a teacher's guidance, they need the drive to succeed. It is my hope to motivate and compel each and everyone of my students towards success.
CLASSROOM COMMUNITY:
We need to:
- Respect Everyone
- Use encouraging words
- Listen to each others ideas
- Speak kindly
- Support each other
- Help everyone to succeed
"It is important to say please and thank you if you want help. I don't like helping people that don't say please and thank you." - 4th Grade Student
