Art
At my school, students do not have an art teacher until they reach fifth grade so it is up to me to teach my students art once a week. I choose projects that are meaningful to them so they are not only interested but they are dedicated to completing the project. Here are a few of the projects that I have done over the years:
Recycling Art Project: Students brought in plastic bottles, cardboard, juice containers, and plastic caps to create art out of recyclable things. Students worked in groups to create a design with the materials given to them. We then glued the recycled things onto a cardboard back drop and students then painted the design using tempera paint. These were hung in the fourth grade hallway for all to see.

Tin Foil Masks: Carnival is a huge holiday that is based in La Ceiba, Honduras. It is held every year in May with floats, music, and lots of typical food. It is similar to Mardi Gras seen in the states. To inspire students, we made masks out of tin foil and permanent markers. Students designed their own masks on paper before transferring it to the foil piece given to them. We added feathers and beads to give it more detail.
Warm/Cool Color Collage: After learning about the color wheel and warm/cool colors, students used old magazines to find designs that showed warm colors and cool colors. Pictures ranged from to soccer balls to flowers - whatever fit the taste of each student. They then arranged the photos to make a collage. It brought lots of color to our classroom.
