Social Studies
Students are required to learn about the different regions in the United States focusing specifically on geography and history. This is a difficult topic to teach students who are from Honduras, and many of whom have never been to the United States. As a way to have students connect more with this information, I have designed different simulations that have brought the material closer to them. We were able to relate to immigrants traveling to the United States by making an Immigration Station similar to the one seen at Ellis Island in our classroom. I acted as an immigration officer and spoke only French to them so they could understand what it would be like to be alone in a foreign country.
We took a virtual field trip to the Grand Canyon and to the nation's capitol, Washington D.C to see the different landforms and landmarks throughout the United States. It is my goal in each of my Social Studies units to make the information taught memorable so my students will be able to continue using it throughout the year and their education.
